Midway's classic epitomizes what an arcade racer should offer. For me this title wasn't Bond or Halo, it was San Francisco Rush 2049. Hitting the shortcuts perfectly, rocketing off jumps, pulling out a barrel roll just to show off, exploding at the slightest mistake - it's all still a blast.ĭave Exclaims Everyone has a game that spawned more tournaments and hours of competition than every other multiplayer experience combined. It's easy to pick up and play, but unforgiving and nearly impossible to completely master. The game almost feels like it was made by SEGA. Playing SF Rush 2049 again reaffirmed everything I've had stored away in memories. Needless to say, when we finally got our hands on the full version, we were some happy Dreamcast owners. Although it only had one track to play and limited options for customizing your ride, we played that demo like our life depended on it. When my friends and I got a hold of the disc with a SF Rush 2049 demo on it, we were instantly hooked. Add to this the awesome stunt mode and you have a game that remains one of the all-time best multiplayer experiences in console history.Įrik Says If you're like me, you couldn't wait for the newest issue of the Official Dreamcast Magazine to arrive at your doorstep for one simple reason - the demo disc. You have to know the shortcuts (which are many) and have the skill to navigate through some very tight terrain. Playing on the default mode, your chances of getting higher than fourth place in your first hour of play time are not very good. The AI is perhaps as unforgiving as in any racing game before or since. Even after all these years, Rush is still a fast, fun and incredibly difficult adventure. What I'm trying to say is that SF Rush is awesome (and that I got slapped by a lot of girls in high school). But it's worth it for those few times you actually make it through to the finish.

The risks are many and, more often than not, lead to some painful crashes. You can always take the long road if you're patient or you can try and navigate the shortcuts from first base to third. Hil Says Playing SF Rush is like trying to score with a girl in high school. This bastion of multiplayer gaming came in at the coveted fourth spot on our list of Dreamcast games. Here was everything we could have hoped for in a racing game plus the kitchen sink.

2049 took all of the huge jumps, secret paths, and futuristic street racing that everyone loved in the arcade and slammed home an insane Battle Mode and a surprisingly addictive Stunt Mode. Midway's Rush racers have been arcade favorites of ours for longer than we care to remember, but nothing had us prepared for San Francisco Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast.
